Google DeepMind Unveils Gemini 2.5 With Breakthrough Reasoning Capabilities

Google DeepMind has launched Gemini 2.5, a next-generation multimodal AI model that demonstrates a significant leap in multi-step reasoning, coding, and scientific problem-solving — setting new state-of-the-art scores across leading benchmarks.
Google DeepMind has officially unveiled Gemini 2.5, its most capable AI model to date, claiming record-breaking performance on reasoning-heavy benchmarks including MMLU, MATH, and HumanEval. The model introduces a novel "chain-of-thought distillation" approach that allows it to reason through complex problems step by step without explicit prompting.
Gemini 2.5 outperforms its predecessor on coding tasks by a reported 34%, and achieves near-human accuracy on graduate-level science questions. The model is natively multimodal — capable of understanding and generating text, images, audio, and video — and is now available to enterprise users via Google Cloud Vertex AI.
One of the most significant improvements is in long-context understanding. Gemini 2.5 supports a 2 million token context window, enabling it to process entire codebases, legal documents, or scientific papers in a single inference call. Google claims this makes it especially suited for agentic workflows where the model must track state across long interactions.
"We have fundamentally changed how the model learns to reason," said Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, at the launch event. "Gemini 2.5 represents a qualitative jump, not just a quantitative one." The model will also power the next version of Google's Workspace AI assistant and Bard successor, rolling out to consumers over the coming weeks.
Analysts note that the release intensifies competition with OpenAI's GPT-5 and Anthropic's Claude 4, both of which are expected to debut their own reasoning-optimised models in the same period. The AI frontier is moving faster than ever, and Google appears determined to reclaim top position after a period of playing catch-up.
